HAPPY NATION
scene 1. audition
FREJA

Jo… Jo…
Der er så dejligt ude på landet. Det er morgen. Man står op fordi man
Man
hoster. Man ringer for ørerne. Man ringer til sin flagstang. Man tænker på sol.
Man træner hjernen. Man forsøger at komme i tanke om salamanderne, sådan. Så
angst. Nogens kvalme altid. Nogens jævnfør, konstant. Man forsøger, således:
Man smører sit modersmål i dressing, man vifter sit fædreland op i ansigterne,
Jo!
Engang var tungen tilgængelig. En umærkelig udsmykning. Man så en å og
man sagde: åen. Siv foranstående. Man ønskede de siv i sig. Man mente kroppen
som et landskab. Bevidsthed var lyde og strøm, stemmerne, drøblen. Man hærdede
legeme.
Man mener
sirenesang. Vi vil udgøre en drukning. Selvfølgeligt. Således.
Scene 2. Interview 1
KVINDE - Can I help you?
MAND - I am looking for
someone.
KVINDE - Yes?
MAND - I am looking for a
Danish girl.
KVINDE - Yes?
MAND - Her name is Freja.
KVINDE - Freja?
MAND - I had a dream
about her. And now I have to find her.
KVINDE - I am afraid I
got to have a little more information than that.
MAND - She is tall and
lean and blond.
KVINDE - Everybody in
this country is tall and lean and blonde.
MAND - Everybody in the
whole country?
KVINDE - Yeah, pretty
much.
MAND - Is tall and lean
and blonde?
KVINDE - Yeah, pretty
much.
MAND - But what about

KVINDE - What girl?
MAND - That dark-haired
girl over there.
KVINDE - Oh. She is
probably not Danish.
MAND - She is probably
not Danish?
KVINDE - What is on your
mind?
MAND - I want to tell
Frejas story.
KVINDE - Yes?
MAND - I want to know why
she is so happy.
KVINDE - Aha?
MAND - Researchers have
named the Danes the happiest people on earth.
KVINDE - That’s true. I
am a Dane myself.
MAND - You are?
KVINDE - Can´t you tell?
MAND - Of course. Now by
looking at you, I can tell. Tall and lean and blonde, right?
KVINDE - Exactly. Do you
want some coffee?
Scene 3. Gudhjem
Tre dage før selvmordet. En fiskerestaurant.

MOR - Et kors
Pause

Pause
FAR - Er det fordi du har
ondt i maven?
MOR - Hvem mig?
FAR - Er det
menstruationen?
MOR - Ville du hellere ha

INTERVIEWER
- How do you choose what you wear?
FREJA - My
stylist are amazing you know but, and they help me a lot with what I do but, I
do make sure whenever I have a performance or something I dont just want them
to come with clothes, they have to know what Im into. So before im doing
photoshots and magazineshoots and stuff like that I make sure that we go
shopping together in the beginning of the year and they get a vibe of what I
like and I mean I get inspiration from magazines and stuff like that.
INTERVIEWER
- Whats the best part about what you do?
FREJA -
Probably being able to do what I love to do. Really just being able to perform
on stage and sometimes I cant even believe its a job you know what I do. Just
being able to perform on stage and touch so many people like that, to dance and
being an entartainer, its the best thing about what I do.
INTERVIEWER
- How do you feel about being a role model?
FREJA - I
dont really see myself as a rolemodel you know I mean people may view me as
being that way but when Im on stage thats my time to express myself and to be
something court on court that im not but when I get of the stage Im just like
anyone else.
INTERVIEWER
- How do you relax?
FREJA - Uhm
if I am stressed out about something usually I cant hold it in so whatever im
stressed out about I have to call the person and get the release out, feel
sorry for them hihi. Or I go, I sing, uhmm take a bath, get a massage, stuff
like that.
INTERVIEWER
- What are your hobbies?
FREJA - I
like writing a lot, i do that a lot uhmm, I read a lot of books uhmm I do that.
And Im really into massages right now!
INTERVIEWER
- Does the press bother you?
FREJA -
Honestly the worlds talks about me and Ive just really come to the conclusion
that thats what goes along with what I do you know and that you cant help that
and at the end of the day you know in your heart whats true and whats not and
thats all that matters and the people around you that you really love and care
about they know whats true too and thats what matters.
INTERVIEWER
- Whats the play Happy Nation about?
FREJA - Well
really the play is just a reflection of… me really… and what was going on
inside my head at the time uhmm what I was feeling uhmm I feel like this play,
every song andevery scene has its own thing, you know, the flow of it… theres
so many different moods in the play, but generally its very upbeat and you know
its what I was going throw at the time so hopefully people can relate to it a
little bit
Scene 6- Hirtshals
Få dage før
Gudhjem. En kirkegård.
FAR - Her er det! Her
ligger farmor
MOR - Ester Marie
FAR - Hvor er den holdt
smukt
MOR - Hun lavede de der
rutebiler
FAR - Ja
FREJA - Hun gav mig en
rød bil
MOR - Gjorde hun?
FREJA - Ja den der

MOR - Den blå?
FAR - Er det Anita der
holder det?
FREJA - Den er rød
FAR - Shit jeg ved ikke
engang om det er Anita
MOR - Er det ikke en
gartner?
FAR - Graveren?
FREJA - Hun gav mig en
rød lastbil
MOR - Ja skat
FAR - Jeg er 100 på at det
er Anita?
FREJA - Jeg har aldrig
rørt den
FAR - Hva hedder de der
blomster egentlig?
FREJA - Den står i
vindueskarmen og samler støv
MOR - Caprifolie
FAR - Nej
FREJA - Jeg har dårlig
samvittighed over jeg aldrig har rørt den
MOR - Det skal du ikke ha
skat
FAR - Det kommer man
ingen vegne med
MOR - Sku vi ik ha haft
en blomst med?
FAR - Det hedder ikke
caprifolie
FREJA - Men jeg har
dårlig samvittighed
FAR - Skat, du var jo
lille
MOR - Du ser hende snart
igen skat
FAR - Hold dog op
MOR – I himlen
FAR - Hold dog op med at
sige sådan noget
FREJA - Hvad?
MOR - Undskyld
FREJA - Sige hvad?
MOR - Ikke noget
FAR - Det hedder ikke

FAR - Lille skat
MOR - Farmor elskede dig
FAR – Vi elsker dig
MOR – Du er vores engel
skat.
lykkelige.
FAR – Er du stadig i
tvivl?
MOR – Hvem mig?
FAR – Hvis du ikke er
sikker…
MOR – Jeg er ikke i
tvivl. Jeg er sikker. 100 procent. Så hold dog op.
FAR – Ja.
MOR – Ja.
FAR - Nu tager vi til
gudhjem
Scene 7- alt jeg ønsker
Frejas dans
Scene 8 – interview 2
MAND - Well. You never
gonna be a homeless on the streets, right?
KVINDE - Exactly.
MAND - You don’t need a
man to take care of you?
KVINDE - Exactly.
MAND - You honestly don’t
need a man to take care of you?
KVINDE - Hårelastik.
MAND - What?
KVINDE - Honestly. I
don´t.
MAND - You are with a man
just because... you want to be?
KVINDE - Now you know why
we are so happy.
MAND - Everything here is
really designed to help children, right? Having education, healthcare, taking
care of mothers, who are on maternity leave. I hear you get a year of maternity
leave.
KVINDE - Half a year or a
year, depending.
MAND - Good gracious!
KVINDE - And then, they
go to school, that’s for free. And actually, when you go to university, then
you get paid 4 or 500 dollars to go to university.
MAND - You get paid to go
to university?
KVINDE - It’s free, and
you get paid.
MAND - Ah. That is amazing!
KVINDE - It’s called
educational support. And you do that, because if you have healthy people,
because we have free healthcare, so if you have healthy people, and you have
free education, then you have healthy, well-educated people and what can beat
that?
MAND - What can beat
that? Happy and well educated. This is the country that hasn’t any fear. You
don’t have the fear of being homeless, you don’t have the fear of losing your
job and therefore losing your home. You don’t have that, right?
KVINDE - Of course you
can lose your job, but when you don’t have a job, the government will help you
to get a job, and while you are trying to get a job, you get support from the
state. That’s why the gap between the rich and the poor is one of the smallest
in the world.
MAND - Yes, because
people don’t choose their professions based upon how much they gonna earn, they
chose on, what?
KVINDE - What they are
interested in. Human values.
MAND - Human values?
KVINDE - Do you want some
more coffee?
Scene 9. Taxa.
CHAUFFØR - Taxa
FREJA - Ja
CHAUFFØR -
Freja?
FREJA - Ja
CHAUFFØR - Hop
ind
FREJA - Tak.
Jeg skal til strandvejen 18
CHAUFFØR - Strandvejen
18, det gør vi
Pause
CHAUFFØR - Jeg
har lige set happy nation
FREJA - Ja
CHAUFFØR - Du
var skøn
FREJA - Tak
Pause
CHAUFFØR - Jeg
læste du havde syv mynder
FREJA - Ja
FREJA - koldt - New age. Same but different
Pause.
FREJA – Jeg kan ikke huske mine
replikker Jenny
JEN – så stol på suffløren. stol
på dig selv
FREJA – dont design me jenny
JEN – medlidende - Jeg
nægter stadig at kalde dig so
FREJA – spydigt - Du må kalde mig hvad fanden du vil Jenny
LP
FREJA - hvisker sammenbidt, migræneondt - Stop crying your heart out, Jenny
FREJA - hvæser, angstraser - Jeg vil ikke have dyr i min LEJLIGHED JENNY.
Freja?
FREJA - ryster, helt væk i øjnene, holder sig angst for munden - Er det kanin?
JEN - Det er en souvenir fra Rom
FREJA - Tager hårdt fat i Jen igen, hendes hænder - Dans med mig
JEN – Slap af
FREJA – Sitrer, hvæser - Dont design me
JEN – Slap af Freja!
FREJA - Dont design me – or I will fucking kill you!
scene 12 –
interview 3
MAND – Well I am looking for this special Danish girl named Freja. I want to
know why she is so happy.
KVINDE – Everybody in
this country is happy.
MAND – Everybody? In the
whole country?
KVINDE – Pretty much. I
can tell you how we party in Denmark.
MAND - Oh yeah, you like
to party in Denmark?
KVINDE - Absolutely.
Every Friday night we take a sausage and we put a flag in it.
MAND - Oh. That’s cute.
KVINDE - And we burn that
flag.
MAND - For real? You do
that? You burn your own flag?
KVINDE - Well you have to
eat the sausage don’t you?
MAND - Ahh.
KVINDE - No of course we
don’t burn our flag, it was just a joke, we are very humoristic in Denmark.
MAND - Oh haha.
KVINDE - We are a happy
nation, you know.
MAND - I know that,
right. Well, tell me how I could learn to be as happy as you danes.
KVINDE - Laudate omnes gentes laudate.
MAND - What?
KVINDE -
Laudate omnes gentes laudate. Magnificat in secula. Et anima mea laudate.
Magnificat in secula.
MAND - What
does that mean?
KVINDE - Praise ye all nations. Magnificat forever. And my soul sings. Magnificat forever.
MAND - Oh you have a slogan?
KVINDE - A slogan with cats in it, we adore cats in Denmark, We're traveling in time.
MAND - I am afraid Im falling in love with this country of yours. And If I wanted to move to Denmark, I just could right?
KVINDE - Of course you could, everybody is welcome here.
MAND - Its really a situation leading to sweet salvation right?
KVINDE - Absolutely. It’s a nation where people understand and dream of the perfect man.
MAND - Well, you really have the ability to dream in this country of yours, right?
KVINDE - For the people, for the good. For mankind brotherhood. That’s a yes!
MAND - I also have the feeling that you are all very openminded and that you are in the lead of social skills and not lonely at all?
KVINDE - Well, over time we've learned from the past. That no man's fit to rule the world alone. A man will die but not his ideas.
MAND - And when somebody tells you that rascism is still a problem in Denmark how do you answer?
KVINDE - Do you want some more coffee?
MAND – Actually I am looking for this girl named / Freja
KVINDE – Everybody in this country is named Freja.
MAND – Well I guess it’s a common name, but she is an actress. I thought she was famous here in Denmark and /
KVINDE – Freja? You mean the love goddess?
MAND – The love goddess? Shes an actress and /
KVINDE – Oh shes the best. Everybody knows her.
MAND – Is that right? Everybody knows her?
KVINDE – Of course they do. Actually I saw here on the stage last week. You should go and see the play yourself. I didn’t understand a word but she was lovely.
MAND – Shes is playing at a theater these days?
KVINDE – Singing, dancing, everybody loves her. Do you want some more coffee?
Scene 13 – freja og jason
En
skov.
JASON – Freja…
FREJA – Jeg er kærligheden som begreb. Jeg er lykken. Jeg er the happy nation.
JASON – Jeg elsker dig
FREJA – Skriv det på mig
JASON – Hvad?
Pludselig
høres noget i skoven.
Jason lytter. Imens tager Freja telefonen og filmer
Jason.
JASON - Læg den væk. Læg den
væk for fanden, der kommer nogen.
Freja
Scene 15 –
monolog
FREJA
I was walking along the street. It was night. Late at night. And I was looking for some action. My
name is freja. I love baseball and sunshine. I am a meatpacker. I am wrapped in plastic. I swallow
worms for free. I was listening to the white album. I was listening to happiness is a warm gun. I was
listening to Im so tired. I was listening to blackbird. I was looking for some action. I was walking
along the street. I was watching this cum-filled video with six male sperm-addicts who took on gangs
of cum-dripping cocks. Then I called Jason. Then I called john. Then I called jennifer. Then I called
chris and kris. I am freja. This is a song I wrote years ago when I was going through a very hard time
personally in my life. We all have those moments. But it seems to fit the hard times that we have been
going through lately here in denmark. But do you know what. I can see the light of a clear blue
morning. But I was walking along the street. It was night. Late at night. And I was looking for some
action. I am freja. I love sperm. I love snow as pure as the soul. There is always music in the air. Do
you know what I mean. There is never quiet. Even when we take a pause. Lets take a pause.

you know what I mean. There is never quiet. Even when we take a pause. Lets take a pause.
Pause.
This magic moment. Can you feel it. I have been
listening to pause all my life. I have been talked to
death. I have been stalked in this closet for a very long time. I have been screaming. I have seen a bus
filled with raw chickens and the prime minister. The prime minister is blinking. It means trouble
higher up. My name is freja. My lips are so sweet and fruity. I have to puke. I have to put my hands
on someone. I want to come so badly. I want to kiss so badly. I want to fuck. Where is my body. It is
walking along the street. It is night. Late at night. And it is looking for some action. It is working
night shifts. It is eating fish. It is important for the soul to eat fish. The body is the soul. The soul is
eating snow in the street. It is looking for some letters. The letter J maybe. The letter B. The body
wants to spell you something. The soul wants to put a spell on something. The blackest night is late at
night. The best fuck I ever had was me. The best fucking moron is my father. Let me tell you
something about my father. He is blinking. He is wearing a sour face. What do I mean. His face has a
sour look on it. Look at it. The best fuck I can imagine is my fathers soul. The best best fuck I can
imagine is reality. Let me tell you something about reality. It is walking along the memory lane. It is
looking for some forgiveness. Please. This drug is legal. I never told anybody this before but my left
arm is lame. This is the century of lame arms. This is the century of a warm gun. This is the century
of happiness. This is so sweet and fruity. Ha ha. Bang bang. I was laughing. I was bleeding. I was
awake. I was naked. I was hungry. I was horny. I was sucking cats and dogs and rats. Was it me. Was
it you. Questions in a world of blue. I was walking along the street. Black dark blue light night. What
do I mean. My name is freja. That is not true. That is a fucking lie. I am a liar. I am a person. What do
I mean. I have legs. I am walking along the street and it is night and it is late at night and I am
looking for some action. Let me tell you something about action. Let me tell you something about
happiness. Let me tell you something about sperm. Do you want to hear about my specials. I dont
have any. Where is my hot water. Where is my good damn hot water. I dont have any. I dont have
any. I dont have any. Ive got chips on my tits. And I love it. Ive got sauce in my lap. Do you mind it. I
dont mind sperm. What do I mean. I dont mind electricity. I dont mind the weather. Ive got caps and
sweaters. The hardest part is yet to come and you will cross the country alone. Let me tell you
something about this country. It is wearing a sour face. What do I mean. The face has a sour look on
it. What do I mean. I am freja and I am walking along the street. It is night. Late a night. The sun is
shining. Come on get happy. Forget your troubles and just get happy. Shout hallelujah and just get
happy. I say the lord is waiting to take your hand. I say it is all so nice and peaceful on the other side.
I say it like it is, like it sounds. There Ive said it. I am freja. I see you. I really see you upside down.
But my brain knows better. It really picks you up and turns you around. Let me tell you something
about my brain. What do I mean. Let me tell you something about my thoughts, my feelings. What do
I mean. Please dont worry lover. This is the final scene. This is facts not fiction. But I am walking
along the street. But I am smiling. But I am dancing. I am freja I am human. I have wings. I am an
angel. I am white. I am smiling. I am crying. I am laughing. I am looking for some action. Do you
mind it. Do you mind me. Do you mind my body. Do you mind my mind. Do you mind mind mind.
Do you want me. Do you want my body. Do you want my soul. Do you like that. Do you like that
boy. Do you like that baby. Do you look at me. Look at me. I am walking along the street. I am
walking along the street. I am so sad. I am so sorry. This is facts not fiction. For the first time in years.
You go to my head. Do you hear me. Do you hear me. Do you hear me. Do you hear me.

Scene 16 - tilstå
En koreografi. Dansere. En koreograf. Freja kan
ikke følge med.
Freja må give op. Danserne danser videre. Koreografen må hjælpe
hende
Freja- Tak.
jeg er ærlig
talt så nervøs.
Jeg har
kastet op fire gange i nat.
Undskyld?
Kan vi tage
den igen?
scene 17.
sort. Så træder faren frem på skærmen.
FAR – Freja? … Vågn op… Freja?
Freja vågner.
FAR - Hej Freja
FREJA - Hej far
FAR - Savner du os?
FREJA - nikker, begynder
at græde lige så stille - Ja. Helt
vildt. Jeg savner jer helt vildt
FAR - Du skal ikke græde. Vi er jo lige her
FREJA - Ja
FAR - Du kan godt se mig
ikke?
FREJA - Jo
FREJA - Jo
Du
er inde i fjernsynet.
FAR - Skal jeg komme ud?
FREJA - Herud?
FAR - Ud til dig? I stuen?
FREJA - …. Det ved jeg ikke… Kan du det?
FAR – Ja da.
Pause.
FREJA – Hvor er mor?
FAR – Hun laver humus
FREJA - Jeg elsker humus
FAR - Det ved jeg godt
FREJA – Med masser af citron
FAR – Mor bruger lime
FREJA – Og salt
FAR – Skal jeg kalde på hende?
FREJA - … Ja
Det banker på døren. Freja
stivner. Stilhed. Det banker på døren igen.
JEN – out - Freja?
FAR - Freja?
FREJA - Hvem er det?
JEN – out - Det er
Jenny
FAR - Det er Jenny
JEN – out - Må jeg
komme ind?
FAR - Må hun komme ind?
FREJA - … Ja
FREJA – sidder stadig helt
handlingslammet - … Ja
FREJA - Ja. To sekunder. Giv mig to sekunder, Jenny. Så kommer
jeg. Jeg skal lige have noget tøj på
FAR - Du har tøj på skat. Hvorfor lyver du?
FREJA - Gå væk
FAR - Hvorfor åbner du ikke for hende?
FREJA - prøver at slukke
FAR - Hvad?
FREJA - Gå nu væk med dig
FAR - Jeg er sgu da lige her. Hallo?
HEJ JENNY!
FREJA - Hold op. Hold lige op.
JEN – off – Jeg kan
altså godt holde til at se dig nøgen
FAR - HUN ER IKKE NØGEN
JEN – off – HVAD? VIL
DU KOMME OG ÅBNE?
FAR - JA JENNY. FREJA KOMMER OG ÅBNER NU
Freja ved ikke hvad hun skal
gøre. Hun prøver desperat at rydde lidt op i al svineriet.
Endelig forsvinder far.
FREJA - Nej vent Jenny. Jeg kommer nu
